Spring Cleaning: All Natural Carpet Cleaner

I don’t know about you guys but we are sure tired of this winter weather and we are ready for spring to be here! We’re ready for the warmer weather, sun shinning through our windows, tulips everywhere and lots of walks outside!

With spring around the corner that also means that our home is ready for a big spring time cleaning! We’re talking de-cluttering, dusting all the places that haven’t seen the light of day for months, scrubbing the oven and my favourites… cleaning the carpets!!!

I have a love hate relationship with carpets. On one hand I love the soft + cozyiness it brings to a room… on the other, it grosses me out just how many germs, bacteria and who knows what else is stuck in there!

3 Unpleasant Facts about Carpet

1. Carpets Are 1 Of the Top 5 Dirtiest Places In Your Home

Amongst dirty kitchen cloths/ sponges, hardware/handles, bathtubs and toilets, carpets are one of the top categories that carry the most amount of dirt and bacteria in your home!

2. Your Carpets Could Be Making You Sick

Studies have shown that thousands of dust mites can survive on just one ounce of carpet dust. The Norovirus which is the virus linked to the common stomach flu can survive on an unclean carpet for over a month! Gross!

3. Skin Cells And Creepy Crawlers In Your Carpets

Okay this one is gross enough to make you cringe a little inside…Trillions of microscopic dust mites live and dwell within our carpets. They eat our shed skin cells and the residue of their nesting make our living areas very unhygienic because their droppings mix with other dirt and it becomes airborne, which can cause allergies and other health consequences.

How do I get rid of this?!

I’m sharing with you guys my favorite natural solution that I love to use on my carpets to keep them smelling fresh, clean and feeling good!

What You’ll Need: 4 Simple Ingredients

Baking Soda:

I use baking soda as my base because it spreads easily and absorbs the odors in your home naturally, unlike candles, wax lamps or air fresheners which only cover up the scent. Because baking soda is basic it reacts with the acidic (or odors) and helps to neutralize them.

This simple ingredient is something I’m sure just about every home has. Although it may not be great for your diet there many ways you can clean your home with it! You can use whatever salt you have on hand whether it’s sea salt, kosher salt or table salt. Though the larger the grain the more abrasive qualities it will have. The salt can help remove minor stains and bring up and stuck on dirt.

Young Living Lemon Essential Oil:

Lemon is one of my absolute favourite oils to use for cleaning! Not only does it make your home smell incredibly fresh but it also has antibacterial properties and helps with all your deep cleaning needs. Lemon helps with removing any oily or greasy stains your may have and will freshen and room and give it an instant energy boost!

Young Living Purification Essential Oil:

Purification is another amazing blend that Young Living offers! It’s made up of Lemongrass, Rosemary, Melaleuca (Tea Tree), Myrtle and Citronella. This blend does just what its name suggests and helps to purify. Just by adding a few drops to the mixture gets rid of any nasty odors that may be stuck in your carpet!

Okay you guys, its super easy and takes less than 5 minutes!

  1. Measure out Baking Soda. Now this will depend on the size of jar you picked. For this small jar I used 1 1/2 Cups. Tip: Fill jar leaving approximately 1/4 of the jar empty.

2. Fill remaining jar with salt. I used 1/4 cup

3. Next we’re adding essential oils!

Add 10 -20 Drops of Lemon essential oil.

Add 10 – 15 Drops of Purification Essential Oil

Stir until well combined.

It’s That Simple!

Vacuum well before using. Sprinkle across entire carpeted area and leave 30- 45 minutes. Vacuum well, vertically and horizontally. Repeat once a month to keep your carpets fresh and clean!
